Four official units that are not in your NCERT book
The NEET syllabus is a list of units and topics published by NMC. NCERT is a set of textbooks. They are not the same document, and they do not perfectly overlap.
P-Block Elements (Groups 13 to 18)
A full official NMC unit — electronic configuration, trends across periods and down groups, and the unusual behaviour of the first element in each group. NCERT removed its p-Block chapters in the 2023 rationalisation. If you study only from NCERT, you will not see this at all.
Purification and Characterisation of Organic Compounds
Crystallisation, sublimation, distillation, differential extraction, chromatography; detection of nitrogen, sulphur, phosphorus and halogens; estimation of elements; empirical and molecular formula calculations. Most of this was cut from NCERT Class 11.
Experimental Skills (Physics)
An official unit covering practical and experiment-based questions. It maps to no single NCERT chapter, so it tends to be skipped entirely rather than deliberately.
Principles Related to Practical Chemistry
Another official unit spanning both classes with no chapter of its own. Same risk.
NMC's unit list — the authoritative version
The checklist above is organised by NCERT chapter, because that is how students actually study. This is the official list it maps onto: 20 units in Physics, 20 in Chemistry and 10 in Biology — 50 units in total. Note that NMC does not split Biology into Botany and Zoology; that split is a teaching convention, not official.
What the paper actually looks like
| Subject | Questions | Marks |
|---|---|---|
| Physics | 45 | 180 |
| Chemistry | 45 | 180 |
| Biology (Botany & Zoology) | 90 | 360 |
| Total | 180 | 720 |
Chapters that are no longer in the syllabus
The 2024 rationalisation removed a substantial amount of content, and it has stayed out in 2025 and 2026. If you are working from an older book or an older senior's notes, these are no longer examinable.
Biology — whole chapters removed
Confidence: high. We checked the sub-topic text of the relevant units in the current NMC document and confirmed these do not appear.
Chemistry — whole chapters removed
Confidence: high on their absence from the current syllabus, which we verified directly. NMC has never published a formal "deleted topics" annexure, so treat any longer topic-by-topic deletion list you find online with caution.
Ticking chapters is easy. Retaining them is the hard part.
A syllabus tracker tells you what you have covered once. Regular testing tells you what you actually still know — which is what DNA's daily cycle is built around.
